BYU Commencement

Bryce, Kathleen, Katy, Jay, Ashlee, David, Berkeley
Jo wanted to see a picture of my roommates, so there you have it.

These are some songs that I listen to over and over again:

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.Elton John
I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues.Elton John
9 Crimes.Damien Rice
Not Ready To Make Nice.Dixie Chicks
Question.Old 97's
Dark Blue.Jack's Mannequin
Hey There Delilah.Plain White T's
Driving With The Brakes On.Del Amitri
Don't Slow Down.Copeland

Okay, so that list turned out to be a little longer than expected, but you should check some of those songs out because they are treasures.

I don't know if everyone heard about this, but Dick Cheney spoke at BYU's commencement this week, and Ralph Nader was asked to speak at an alternative commencement after the graduation in order to appease those who are opposed to Cheney's role as vice president to George Bush. The Salt Lake Tribune wrote that "Nader has accepted an invitation by BYU students to speak Thursday evening after Vice President Dick Cheney addresses graduates. The event's organizers say they oppose the actions of Cheney as part of President's Bush's administration and want to offer an alternative voice on that day." Cheney opponents claimed that having the vice president speak at commencement directly counters the honor code, which emphasizes honesty and integrity. But what happened to supporting our government leaders and being a tolerant people? I think this is embarrassing for BYU. It's an honor to have Dick Cheney speak at our commencement, and this intolerant opposition will leave an ugly stain on BYU's reputation.

The Deseret News wrote the following: "BYU’s invite to the V.P. sparked debate among both Utah’s Latter-day Saint faithful and non-believers alike, contradicting the cozy invite from the Church’s First Presidency. 'Along with BYU graduates, their parents and the faculty and staff, we would be honored to welcome you on this special occasion and to hear your commencement address,' church leaders wrote to Cheney.

While Cheney’s visit may be a hit with the majority of BYU students at least 4000 signed a petition denouncing the invitation. Another group of students organized an alternative commencement demonstration."

Do we not uphold the decision made by our First Presidency? Sometimes I wish the BYU culture would change.

Katy -- this is Quin -- first of all, I have to disagree with a few of your song choices, mainly "I'm not ready to make nice" by the Ditsy Chicks. It's cool if you like it, but I can't stand it. I do, however, appreciate the Elton John "Classics." Also, I think it's awesome that Cheney is speaking at commencement and absolutely retarded that the young democrats club at BYU fought the decision. I sure hope they have a great time listening to Nader speak. Plus, is Nadar really the best they could do? Or is inviting Nadar just a joke?

The point is that it's embarassing - I agree.

Hey how'd you get our music (PodBean) on your blog? I'll try to change out some of the songs today.

I copied and pasted the html code into mine. I couldn't figure out how to change the music, so you just might have to call me today to teach me. ;)

I like that blue dress! It looks so familiar...
Anyway, that's so cool that Dick Cheney spoke at commencement!!! The Ralph Nadar thing is ridiculous, and it reminds me of the time that our school had a riot when George Bush came to campus to talk to the President and Provosts. Anyway, long story short, over 1000 students camped outside the building entrance where Bush would be having the meeting. Thus, the meeting was never held. BOO.
